Plot

Andrew Lloyd Webber's hit musical finally came to the big screen in 1996 after years of speculation about who would win the coveted role of Evita. Madonna managed to convince director Alan Parker to let her play the still popular Argentinian folk heroine, who rose to fame in the 40s at the side of President Juan Perón. The film follows her sometimes tragic life (she died of cancer at only 33) with the critical commentary of Ché as a guide through the bustling Buenos Aires of that time.

Movie

Keeping true to the musical, all the lines in the movie are sung. "Evita" was nominated for an Academy Award in the category "Best Music, Original Song" for the song "You Must Love Me" and also won it. It received nodds in the form of nominations in the departments of cinematography, set decoration, sound and editing.

Andrea's Role

Andrea plays Juan Perón's mistress, who is thrown out by Evita after she and Peron have agreed to work together in the future.

In the original stage musical, the song "Another Suitcase In Another Hall" (in the movie sung by Madonna) is performed by the mistress as well. However, since it is one of the few moments in the film where Evita is shown as vulnerable and frail instead of calculating and power-hungry, director Parker decided to let his main character sing it.

This means that Andrea's part was dramatically shortened: she is now seen, silent, when Madonna wakes her in bed and then again, this time singing a few lines, only little later when she leaves. This song is called "Hello And Goodbye" and can easily be recognized as a slight variation of "Another Suitcase In Another Hall".
