Video
Director: Nigel Dick
The setting for this video is an airplane runway somewhere in the Mojave desert in South California, USA (some other parts of the video were shot at the Trona airfield which is 80 miles North of Mojave). Part of this desert is Death Valley, known for its extremely hot temperatures of up to 134 degrees Fahrenheit (~57 degrees Celsius). At the time of the shooting on May 17th and 18th 2000, the temperatures were over 100 degrees Fahrenheit (~38 degrees Celsius) and so it's no wonder both Andrea and Sharon collapsed from the drastic heat. They had to be taken to hospital and were given the diagnosis of having a heat stroke, but could be released only little later. Says Andrea jokingly: "Us poor Irish girls were char grilled!"
The old airplane used in the video is a Douglas DC3 which was built back in 1939. It has the call sign N26MA and was used to fly mercy missions to Ethiopia. There are still about 1,000 airplanes of that type in flying condition today. Janet Jackson used that very same plane in her video "Runaway" (coincidence ;-)?), where she dances on its wings.
These are the notes that appeared on the call sheet:
Beware of rattlesnakes.
No touching desert turtles - it is against the law.
Remember sunscreen and protective eyewear.
No walking on runway except with clearance.
An aircraft is being used and it will be flown in close proximity to the crew and equipment. Anyone objecting to the above should notify the prod. mgr. or 1st A.D. prior to any filming.
The clip for "Breathless" was nominated for Billboard "Best Jazz/AC Clip of the year 2000".
There is also a second version of the video which uses splitscreen a lot. It's the international version and is the one featured on "Best of - the videos".
Trivia
"Breathless" was a huge hit for the Corrs. It reached #1 in Great Britain and was the most played song of 2001 in Australia.
There are two versions of the single available: a two track with only "Head In The Air" as bonus and another one with three tracks including also "Judy".
A Los Angeles-bases musician named Jenesee Ricco claimed that "Breathless" was originally written by him and sued the Corrs' record company Atlantic for $50,000. Says John Hughes, the band's manager: "The problem is we never heard of Ricco, never met him, never had a song from him; he never sent us anything. Saying Mutt Lange robbed your song is like saying Paul McCartney robbed it. He is one of the most successful music producers ever." The case unsurprisingly never made it to court since Ricco couldn't prove his claims, and the songs don't have very much in common except for their title and the line "Leave me breathless".
